For the past few weeks I have been taking a flash course at the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. I have to admit that I am so used to natural light and spot lighting that this class was inevitable if I wanted to continue to enhance my knowledge of the field. I recall painting though back in the day and had forgotten how much fun it was using a flashlight. This technique doesn't use any photoshop at all. The camera is set to a bulb setting and with a flashlight, flash, and some gels the photographer literally paints the subject with the light. Whatever is painted with the correct amount of light will show up on the camera.
